چکیده

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) are life threatening clinical manifestations of infection due to dengue virus. The clinical features of DHF/DSS are due to bleeding diathesis and increased capillary leak(l). The mechanisms of hemorrhagic manifestations in DHF/DSS are not well understood. The suggested factors contributing to bleeding include thrombocytopenia, coagulopathy and vasculopathy(2). Suggested mechanisms for thrombocytopenia include maturational arrest of megakaryocyte production in the bone marrow(3-5), platelet destruction by the virus itself(5,6) or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)(6,7).

Dengue with Normal Platelet Count and no Hemoconcentration: Automated Hematogram in Cases with Underlying Thalassemia

Dear Editor, Dengue is an important arbovirus infection. This infection can result in an acute febrile illness. The important hematological abnormalities included hemoconcentration and thrombocytopenia (1). Due to the decreased platelet count, the patient might develop petechiae and hemorrhagic complication. In endemic area, the presumptive diagnosis of dengue is usually derived by the cl...

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever manifestations and their transfusion profile.

BACKGROUND Dengue is an infectious disease with a recurring incidence, especially in developing countries. Despite recent economic growth, success in disease control has not been achieved, and dengue has evolved from cyclic epidemic outbreaks to a lack of seasonality. The lack of scientific basis for the proper management of cases with hemorrhagic manifestations, especially regarding transfusio...

When less is more: can we abandon prophylactic platelet transfusion in Dengue fever?

Dengue fever (DF) has several hematological manifestations including thrombocytopenia and increased bleeding risk. Prophylactic platelet transfusion-in the absence of major bleeding-is utilized in DF with thrombocytopenia with the intention of preventing hemorrhagic complications. However, prophylactic platelet transfusion in DF is neither standardized nor supported by clinical evidence. We con...

Role of platelet transfusion in children with bleeding in dengue fever.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES The indications for platelet transfusion in dengue fever are clearly defined in World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines (2011) for dengue fever, but physicians face practical difficulty in its implementation in an epidemic setting. On one hand there is an intense social pressure created by the panic-struck parents to transfuse platelets in presence of bleeding and on ...
